Dear

I am sure you are aware the Navy has five proposed sites for an OLF (Outlying Landing Field) in Virginia and North Carolina.  According to the Navy, the facility is needed to give pilots from Oceana and Fentress an additional training facility.

Cabin Point site, one of the proposed sites, is primarily located in Surry County, Virginia.  As a resident of the county, I am gravely concerned about this situation.  According to the requirements of BRAC 2005, the Navy, the state of Virginia, and the city of Virginia Beach were to meet certain criteria pertaining to encroachment of the landing strip and concerns over jet noise.  It is my understanding that these have not been fulfilled; but, the Navy has, instead, looked elsewhere to help overcrowding and jet noise pollution problems in Virginia Beach.

What does Surry County have to gain?  NOTHING

What does Surry County have to lose?  EVERYTHING

(1)   decreased tax base

(2)   decreased land values

(3)   increased taxes on other county property owners and businesses

   (4) disruption of Native American burial sties

   (5) restrictions on land use for greater than 2,400 acres of tillable land for agricultural   purpose

(6)   loss of historical structures

(7)   loss of recreational areas

(8)   increase in DEAFENING jet noise

(9)   potential adverse effects on human health

  (10) disturbance of local watershed for the Chesapeake Bay

I am grateful to the military for all the sacrifices that have been made so that we might live in a country of freedom.  Our county has made many sacrifices to the military throughout the founding and history of this nation.  My opposition is not an issue of patriotism; it is an issue of politics.

As one of your constituents, I ask you to give your support to Surry County.  I do not feel we should have to give up our way of life to take care of a problem created by the Navy, state of Virginia, and the city of Virginia Beach.

                                                                        Sincerely,
